Jian Sushi: A Harmonious Blend of Art and Cuisine

Chun-Yu Chang's Award-Winning Design Fuses Japanese Aesthetics with Modern Sensibilities

Chun-Yu Chang, the mastermind behind Wu-Su Interior Design, has created a unique dining experience with Jian Sushi. This Japanese restaurant, located in Taiwan, is a testament to the owner's love for antiques and art pieces, and the designer's ability to fuse these elements with a modern aesthetic. The design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022, is a perfect blend of art, cuisine, and the essence of the Japanese spirit.

Upon entering the dining area, the theme of the space becomes immediately apparent. The black-grey leading tonal emits a steady vibe, directing the eye towards the art pieces and cuisines. The lighting is strategically pointed towards these elements, creating a visual experience that is complemented by the auditory. Absorptive materials have been used to prevent sounds from spreading or diffracting, creating an immersive dining experience.

The design incorporates a variety of materials to reflect the owner's insistence on using natural ingredients. Architectural concrete, yakisugi bans, rusted ironware, non-formaldehyde and non-VOC cement paints, and metal-imitating tiles have been used. The use of these materials not only adds to the aesthetic appeal of the space but also aligns with the owner's philosophy.

The 135-square-meter space is equipped with a dining area, a VIP room, an itamae, a pantry, a kitchen, a hand-washing area, and a bathroom. The itamae area has been designed in line with ergonomics and the traffic flow, reflecting the traditional Japanese craftsman spirit. A push door has been installed in the VIP area to ensure privacy, and the lighting arrangements guide the eye towards the art pieces and cuisines.

The design project, which was completed in September 2021, was a result of extensive research. The overall decor, featuring blacks and greys, creates a simple and peaceful spatial feeling. The client's collectibles serve as the main decorations, embodying the concept of 'less is more'. The challenge was to create a personal and steady spatial feeling within an open-end space, which was achieved through the use of representative building materials and lighting.

The designer's vision was to create a space where the characteristics are defined by the artworks, collections, cuisines, and a craftsman's spirit. The restaurant is not just a dining space, but a gallery that showcases the owner's art collection and cuisines. The customers are treated to outstanding cooking skills and an artistic and spiritual vibe, making their visit to the restaurant a unique experience.

Chun-Yu Chang's design for Jian Sushi is a testament to his ability to create a unique dining experience that combines art, cuisine, and the essence of the Japanese spirit. The design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022, is a perfect blend of these elements, creating a space that is not just for dining, but a gallery that showcases the owner's art collection and cuisines.
